Today I am sharing with you a tutorial for creating a pocket of gold sequins in the shape of a deer head, as I did on this layout from my November Studio Calico gallery.
It's really quite simple if you have the right tools and supplies: patterned paper, sequins, vellum, a Silhouette die cut machine, and a sewing machine (or you could hand stitch).
Before starting on the pocket, you have to first cut out the shape from your patterned paper using the Silhouette. I used the deer head shape from the Cuppa printable sheet. I pulled the file into my Silhouette software and traced it so that I could cut it. Position the cut to be where you want it for your layout. This could be anywhere on the page, but I chose to do it toward the upper right corner. It's a little hard to see here but you can tell that I brought in the printable image and then the traced outline in red is what you see on the grid where the Silhouette is going to cut.
Next up are the steps for creating the pocket of sequins on your page.
1. Cut a piece of vellum to a little larger than your shape that you cut out with the silhouette. Place it behind your patterned paper (on the backside) and stitch around 3/4 of the shape, leaving the top area open so that you can put the sequins in. This creates your pocket.
2. Fill the pocket with sequins of your choice.
3. Sew around the remaining portion of the shape, making sure to keep the sequins inside the area of the cut out shape. The key here is to go slow and take your time, especially if you have an intricate shape like I did. Also, note that mine is not perfect, which is completely ok!!
4. Your sequin filled pocket is complete! This is a back and front view so you can see how it looks on both sides.
Let me know if you have any questions about this tutorial!
Happy sequin filled pocket making!!
