It is Scarlet Lime's 2 year anniversary today and I was so excited when they asked me to be their guest designer for this month! They are a scrapbooking kit club that I have shared before and I really love their kits! I have been getting their kits since the very first month and I have to say that I still get so excited each month to see what is packed in that box... and trust me when I tell you that there are always lots of fun and unique little surprises! I love it!
This month's kit seemed very girlie to me with all the flowers and feminine touches so I wanted to show you how you can still create boy pages with it...
The kit has lots of red and black that I knew I could use for my boyish layout but I wanted to add in some more boy colors so I started with yellow cardstock and then added some misting with my green Maya Road mist. To create the misted stars I used some old stickers that I was ready to toss. I adhered them to the page and then misted over them. Then I removed the stickers to reveal the stars! Super easy and quick but still makes a big impact! Then I used a black marker to outline the stars in an imperfect fashion... wanted to keep it looking fun and whimsical!
I used a few strips of the exclusive Scarlet Lime paper that they designed for this month's kit and then used the numbers foam stamp across the page with black ink. (The foam stamp is from an older Creating Keepsakes Kit of the Month.) Added my photos and finished with a few embellishments and journaling and it was done!
This month's kit also inspired me to do a Christmas layout which is a little odd because there isn't a lot of green in the kit and the papers aren't Christmas themed by any means.... but hey, you never know how inspiration is going to hit you sometimes and so you just go with it right? It just goes to show you that if you subscribe to a scrapbooking kit club and one of the kits doesn't seem like it fits with your photos, you can usually get a lot of different looks from it and you can pull different pieces out of it to create pages that go with other themes and holidays! I love that about these kits!
Since I was doing a Christmas/December themed layout I knew that I wanted more green so I used a green cardstock as my base. Then I felt the urge to throw in a little pink to tone down the green a little and to go with the pink that is in her dress. So I pulled out my Maya Road mist in bubblegum pink and just spritzed it across the layout. I love that it doesn't scream pink but it still gives a little bit of sheen and interest to the background. Oh, and before I sprayed the mist I put a strip of scalloped paper to the left of where I knew my photo was going.... that is how I got that scallop/dot pattern that you see next to the photo. I loved all of the circles and flowers in the SL paper so I cut some of them out for my page. To create the scallop border underneath the photo I cut three of the JBS Mercantile chipboard buttons in half. Added some other random bits until I felt like it was complete and that was it!
The last thing I have to share with you is a little card that I threw together with some of my scraps. I don't make cards very often but it is a fun way to use your leftovers! It was super quick and simple - no big techniques here. Just some strips of paper and ribbon and I also used the clear stamp that comes with the kit.... love that tree!
I know I don't usually go into this much detail with my scrapbooking projects that I share but I recently did a survey over on the Studio Calico blog and many of our readers asked us to share more of the process and how/why we create our layouts.... so I am going to start sharing more of the details and how it all comes together when I scrapbook. So, to those that are interested - happy reading - and to those that aren't - hopefully I won't bore you to death! :)
And finally, I do have a GIVEAWAY!! That will wake you up right? I have a complete september kit (see below) to give away to one of my readers! Thanks Scarlet Lime!! All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post and I will be back to draw a winner later in the week. Good luck. Oh, and if you are the impatient type and you want to just order a kit today instead of waiting to see if you won you can go here.
